The more intense the anxiety resulting from frustration related to the primary caregiver, the greater the person’s need to split these objects, separating good from bad parts by repressing the rejecting and/or exciting objects, thus leaving less of the ego, or conscious self, to relate freely.

Projective Identification

A

A psychoanalytic term in which clients defend against anxiety by projecting certain split-off or unwanted parts of themselves onto the other person, who is then manipulated (usually unconsciously) to act according to these projections.

Example: viewing a sibling as spoiled and then treating them with disdain and frustration, which in turn elicits dependent or entitled behavior from the sibling — thereby confirming the projection.

Repression

A

Describes the unconscious process that occurs when the superego seeks to repress the id’s innate impulses and drives. Repression is the cause of a wide range of neurotic symptoms, such as obsessions, compulsions, hallucinations, psychosomatic complaints, anxiety, and depression. Because it happens outside of awareness, repression is considered more pathological than suppression.

The intentional conscious avoidance of difficult inner thoughts, feelings, and desires. When thoughtfully chosen, this defense can be very useful when facing difficult emotions over extended periods of time, such as grief, complicated loss, and so on.

Refers to unconsciously redirecting intense emotion from a threatening object to a less-threatening object. Occurs commonly in families, such as when a parent is angry with a boss or situation at work and then redirects this anger onto a partner or children.

A

Detriangulation

A

Psychoanalytic therapists identify situations in which the parents have triangulated a symptomatic child into the relationship to deflect attention away from their couple distress. Once the child’s role is made clear, the therapist dismisses the symptomatic child from therapy and proceeds to work with the couple to address the issues that created the need for the child’s symptoms.

Eliciting

A

Uses clients’ spontaneous motives to move the family in a direction that is mutually beneficial and dialogical. The therapist facilitates this process by integrating the facts of the situation, each person’s individual psychology, and interactive transitions to help the family rework the balances of entitlement and indebtedness, helping each member to reinterpret past interactions and identify new ways to move forward.

Family-of-Origin Therapy

(Psychoanalytic Family Therapy)

A

Three-stage model created by Framo (1992) for working with couples that involved couples therapy, couples group therapy, and family-of-origin therapy. Therapists begin working with the couple alone to increase insight into their personal and relational dynamics. Next, the couple join a couples group, where they receive feedback from other couples and also view their dynamics.

Finally, each individual member of the couple is invited to have a four-hour-long session with his or her family of origin without the other partner present. These extended family-of-origin sessions are used to clarify and work through past and present issues, thereby freeing individuals to respond to their partners and children without the “ghosts” of these past attachments.

Ethical Systems and Relational Ethics

A

Used in families to maintain trustworthiness, fairness, and loyalty between family members; its breakdown results in individual and/or relational symptoms. The goal of therapy is to reestablish an ethical system in which family members are able to trust one another and to treat one another with fairness.

Ledger of Entitlements and Indebtedness

A

The moral and ethical system within the family. An internal accounting of what you believe is due to you and what you owe others. Because in families each person has his or her own internal accounting system that has a different bottom line, tensions arise over who is entitled to what, especially if there is no consensus on what is fair and how give-and-take should be balanced in the family.

Entitlements
"**Ethical guarantees**" to merits that are earned in the context of relationships, such as the freedom that parents are entitled to because of the care they extend to children. The person's sense of entitlement may be evident only in a crisis or an extreme situation, such as a parent suddenly becoming ill.

Invisible Loyalties
May manifest as **indifference**, **avoidance**, or **indecisiveness** in relation to the object of loyalty, blocking commitment in a current relationship.

Revolving Slate
A **destructive** relational process in which one person takes **revenge** (or insists on entitlements) in one relationship based on the relational transactions in another relationship. Instead of reconciling the "slate" or account in the relationship in which the debt was accrued, the person treats an innocent person as if he or she were the original debtor.

Transgenerational Legacy
In contextual therapy, each person inherits a legacy, a **transgenerational mandate** that links the endowments of the current generation to its obligations to future generations. **Legacy is a positive force** in the chain of survival.

Multidirectional Partiality | (Contextual Family Therapy)
In contextual therapy, the therapist builds the therapeutic alliance by being "partial" with all members of the family. In practice, this multidirectional partiality generally involves **sequential siding** with each member by empathizing with each person's position in turn.

Working through Entitlements and Perceived Legacies
In contextual therapy, the therapeutic process of helping family members examine what they believe they're "owed" (entitlements) based on what they've given or sacrificed, and how they've interpreted their family inheritance of debts, obligations, and injustices (perceived legacies).

Perceived Legacies
The intergenerational patterns, beliefs, and ethical obligations that a person unconsciously carries from their family of origin. The negative effects of significant family events such as immigration, trauma, major loss, violence, substance abuse, and other legacies commonly are **transmitted across three or more generations**, such as the intergenerational effects of slavery.

Exoneration of Self
In contextual therapy, this refers to "exonerating self" of past debts.

In contextual therapy, the concept of **giving credits** or "**entitlements**".
