About English on Brainscape

What is English?

English is a West Germanic language that has become the International trade language, due in part to England’s early historical colonization and the US’s latter political and economic dominance.

Only 5% of the population are native English speakers, but with most choosing English as a second language -- an amazing global community of over one billion people exists with the ability to communicate effectively, regardless of nationality.

Speaking English is essential to participate in the global job market.

Learning English

Dependent on your first language you might consider English to be an easy language to learn especially if your native language is also Germanic in origin and uses the Latin alphabet.

Whilst the lack of noun genders and tone system make learning easy, English also has a vast vocabulary with lots of irregular verbs. Brainscape has been scientifically proven to make an ideal study tool for language students helping you master the English language at your own pace.

There are thousands of English flashcards prepared by students just like you to choose from on this page. Native English speaking and more advanced students can also try out other dedicated pages in Brainscape such as American Literature, Shakespeare,  British Literature, Poetry, and Medieval Literature.

Why not check out the Brainscape certified Vocab Builder and Proverbs and Idioms classes at the top of the page? They will allow you to drill down the most commonly used vocab, proverbs and idioms in the English Language. At Brainscape, you can also choose to create your own English flashcards with your course notes.

Learn Faster in Brainscape

Learn twice as fast and remember longer with Brainscape’s Confidence-Based Repetition (CBR) system.

Brainscape aims to make a real difference for global education with its incredible free-to-use learning tool.

The CBR system is a combination of three learning methods: active recall, metacognition, and spaced repetition. The CBR system uses the learner’s responses to identify weak areas so that students learn quicker.
